Abstract:

SMILE technique has been suggested to be an alternative to laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) for the correction of myopia, with some advantages. As the SMILE technique is an all-in-one femto second laser procedure, the complications associated with flap-cutting are avoided. Furthermore, as there is no superficial cut, the impact on sub-basal nerve plexus is minor, with less incidence of postoperative dry eye signs and symptoms in the initial postoperative period. However, the benefit of the SMILE technique over LASIK in terms of postoperative visual acuity, refraction and visual quality is not clear. This presentation will discuss pros & cons of each technique as a treatment for low, moderate and high myopia with astigmatism.
