Assessment and management of neuropathic pain: A comprehensive approach.
Neuropathic pain is a chronic condition caused by damage or dysfunction in the nervous system that can significantly impact a person's quality of life. Due to its complex nature, the assessment and management of neuropathic pain require a comprehensive approach. The assessment involves a detailed medical history, physical examination, and diagnostic tests to identify the underlying cause of neuropathic pain. The management involves pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments such as antidepressants, anticonvulsants, opioids, TENS, physical therapy, CBT, and complementary and alternative medicine. A personalized treatment plan should be developed based on the underlying cause of neuropathic pain to provide effective pain relief and improve function. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the assessment and management of neuropathic pain to improve the quality of life for patients suffering from this condition.Author(s): Kaiyun Luo
