Vortex Ring Formation More Open Access Journals
Vortex rings have been widely used to study the fundamentals of vortex motion because they are "robust, as well as simpler to generate, analyze, and isolate from end-effects than other configurations". The wide application of vortex rings to the study of vortical flow structures makes it important that experimental results for vortex rings are repeatable and that the effects of generation conditions are understood. Previously there has been disagreement between various groups and between experiments and theory about the value of the circulation of rings. It has been proposed that differences in information conditions and the production of secondary vorticity are partially responsible. In an attempt to standardize formation geometries and eliminate secondary vorticity, Glezer proposed a simple geometry for a vortex ring generator.
