PCR Technology Innovations

The gene amplification method developed by genetics researcher Kary Mullis on a twilight drive through the northern California hills 10 years prior - the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) - continues to revolutionize the life sciences. Utilizations in molecular biology research and in diagnostic tests are multiplying, and PCR is even bringing a novel molecular approach to such fields as epidemiology and paleontology. PCR is, and will keep on being, essential in the largest-scale sequencing project, the Human Genome Project, just as other genome research. "PCR is one of the principle advances utilized in all periods of the genome project. It is used for all sequence-tagged sites; distinguishing different markers; describing transformations for infection affiliations; physical mapping and assembling contigs [a method of approaching a gene by aligning overlapping sequences]; looking at variations in different populations; and, of course, in sequencing."
