Mitochondrial DNA Journals

Mitochondrial DNA gives various characteristics helpful for forensic studies, particularly related to the lack of recombination, to a large copy number, and to matrilineal inheritance. mtDNA typing founded on chains of the control region or complete genomic chains analysis is used to examine a variety of forensic samples for example old bones, teeth and hair, in addition to the other biological samples where the DNA content is less. Evaluation and reporting of the conclusions needs careful attention of biological issues in addition to the other issues such as nomenclature and reference population databases. In this work we review mitochondrial DNA profiling methods used for human identification and present their use in the main cases of human identification focusing on the most relevant issues for forensics.
