Immunodeficiency Peer-review Journals
Immunodeficiency or immune compromise may be a state during which the immune system's ability to fight communicable disease and cancer is compromised or entirely absent. Most cases of immunodeficiency are acquired ("secondary") thanks to extrinsic factors that affect the patient's system . Examples of these extrinsic factors include HIV infection and environmental factors, like nutrition. In the clinical setting, the immunosuppression by some drugs, like steroids, are often either an adverse effect or the intended purpose of the treatment. Examples of such use is in transplant surgery as an anti-rejection measure and in patients affected by an overactive system, as in autoimmune diseases. Some people are born with intrinsic defects in their system, or primary immunodeficiency. A person who has an immunodeficiency of any kind is claimed to be immunocompromised. An immunocompromised person could also be particularly susceptible to opportunistic infections, additionally to normal infections that would affect everyone. Immunodeficiency also decreases cancer immunosurveillance, during which the system scans the body's cells and kills neoplastic ones.
