Genetic Markers Open Access

A genetic marker is a DNA sequence with a known location on a chromosome that  is used to identify individuals or species. It can be described as a variation. A genetic marker may be a short DNA sequence, such as a sequence surrounding a single base-pair change like minisatellites. For many years, gene mapping  is used to identify organisms by traditional phenotype markers.  These genes may be encoded easily  based on the characteristics such as blood types or seed shapes. insufficient number of these types of characteristics in several organisms limits the mapping efforts that could be done. This  promotes the development of gene markers  that identify genetic characteristics that are not readily observable in organisms .
