Drosophila Melanogaster Innovations
Drosophila melanogaster species is generally known as the common fruit fly or vinegar fly belongs to the family of Drosophilidae, remains one of the most commonly used model organisms for biomedical science. These tools permit researchers to retain complex stocks with various mutations on particular chromosomes over generations; an advance that made flies the premier genetic system. Its current distribution is worldwide, being found on every continent and most islands (Markow and O'Grady, 2005b). A human commensally associated primarily with rotting fruits, D. melanogaster is also related with a wide array of decaying vegetables and other plant matter. As with humans, the chromosomes of Drosophila melanogaster come in pairs - but distinct from humans, which have 23 pairs of chromosomes, the fruit fly has only four: a pair of sex chromosomes (two X chromosomes for females, one X and one Y for males), together designated Chromosome 1, along with three pairs of autosomes.
