Dental Trauma Scholarly Journal
Dental trauma refers to injury to the teeth and/or periodontium (gums, periodontal ligament, alveolar bone), and nearby soft tissues like the lips, tongue, etc. The study of dental trauma is named dental traumatology.
Trauma to the teeth are often caused by auto accidents, falls, and injury from a spread of sports, like football, hockey, soccer, volleyball, basketball, and baseball. Patients suffering significant head, neck, or facial trauma should be evaluated and treated during a hospital ER setting. Such injury may include bleeding from the nose or ears, dizziness, concussion, lapse of memory, severe headache, disorientation, earache, or breaking (fracture) of the skull and/or jaws. Most hospitals wear staff oral surgeons who can treat fractures of the upper or mandible and perform emergency tooth removal (dental extractions) and reconstruction of the dental arches.
Traumatic dental injuries occur frequently in young adults and children, comprising 5% of all injuries. Twenty‐five percent of school children undergoes dental trauma and 33% of adults undergoes dental trauma to the permanent dentition, with the bulk of the injuries occurring before age 19.
