Autophagy Journals
Autophagy is that the natural, regulated mechanism of the cell that removes unessential or disfunctional elements.[3] It permits the orderly degradation and exercise of cellular elements.
Three varieties of autophagy are usually described: macroautophagy, microautophagy, and chaperone-mediated autophagy (CMA). In macroautophagy, cytoplasmatic elements (like mitochondria) are targeted and isolated from the remainder of the cell among a double-membraned vesicle referred to as an autophagosome,[6][7] that, in time, fuses with an available cell organ, bringing its specialty method of waste management and disposal; and eventually the contents of the vesicle (now referred to as an autolysosome) are degraded and recycled.
In disease, autophagy has been seen as an adaptative response to stress, promoting survival of the cell; however in alternative cases it seems to push cell death and morbidity. within the extreme case of starvation, the breakdown of cellular parts promotes cellular survival by maintaining cellular energy levels.
