Abstract:

Hypertension in children is often underdiagnosed and under-managed, yet it is a growing contributor to long term cardiovascular risk. Nia Okonkwo from Lagos provides a comprehensive update on current diagnostic criteria, screening recommendations, and treatment strategies for pediatric hypertension. This session explores the epidemiology of pediatric hypertension in both developed and low-to-middle-income countries, highlighting the impact of obesity, lifestyle changes, and socioeconomic factors. Okonkwo discusses practical BP measurement techniques, ambulatory monitoring, and pharmacologic options tailored to pediatric physiology. Case studies will underscore the importance of early identification and how pediatricians can implement preventive strategies through school health programs and family-centered interventions.
