Vortex Breakdown Open Access Journals

The phenomenon of vortex breakdown occurs some times in vortex filaments such as trailing vortices. Describes this phenomenon as a sudden and drastic change of structure which sometimes occurs in a swirling flow. Even later three decades of research, however, the physical mechanism that leads to vortex breakdown is not well understood. Vortex disruption occurs in two distinct types. Bubble or axisymmetric type and Spiral type. In the first type of break-down, there is a fast expansion of the core-forming a bubble-like structure that is nearly axisymmetric. In the second type, the vortex center line deforms into a spiral without any appreciable growth in core size. An essential feature of vortex disruption is that the axial flow, which is necessary for the breakdown, regardless of the vortex axis. In special, the overall direction of axial flow is normally reversed inside the bubble.
