Protein Therapeutics

Any protein based drug is termed as “therapeutic protein,” but it was first used to describe medicines that are genetically engineered versions of naturally occurring human proteins. Protein-based therapeutics has made much progress over the past 20 years. These are classified based on their pharmacologic activity as drugs (a) restore a protein that is deficient or abnormal (b) enhance an existing pathway (c) provide a novel function or activity (d) interfere with a molecule or organism (e) deliver a payload such as a radionuclide. These are produced using microbial fermentation on cell cultures, in transgenic plants and animals. These proteins are highly effective in vivo and used to treat patients suffering from heart attacks, strokes, cancers, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, heamophilia and anemia.
