Polar Vortex

 

A polar vortex may be a low area—a wide expanse of cold air with a swirling movement—which is parked in polar regions. During winter, the polar vortex at the North Pole expands, sending cold air southward. This happens fairly regularly and is usually related to outbreaks of cold temperatures within the us.

A polar vortex is a neighborhood of low pressure—a wide expanse of swirling cold air—that is parked in polar regions. The one up north can cause some pretty wild weather and sub-zero temperatures within the us. But it isn't a replacement thing—this low-pressure system is nearly always up there.

Sometimes this low-pressure system, filled with cold Arctic air, strays a touch bit too far away from home. A part of it can break off and migrate towards south, bringing all of that cold air with it. Just like that, areas as far south as Florida get to experience their own little taste of life within the Arctic.
