Genes are made of DNA, and so is the genome itself. A gene contains of enough DNA to code for one protein, and a genome is just the sum total of an organism's DNA. The human genome, for example, is the set of genetic material encoded in 46 chromosomes found in the nucleus of the each cell. The chromosomes are organized by 23 pairs — one chromosome of each pair is inherited from the mother and one from the father. In furthermost living things, the genome is made of a chemical called DNA. The genome contains genes, which are packed in chromosomes and the affect specific features of the organism. The work of the Human Genome Project has allowed researchers to begin to understand the blueprint for building a person. As academics learn extra about the functions of genes and proteins, this knowledge will be have a major impact in the fields of medicine, biotechnology, and the life sciences.
