Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder which is characterized by symptoms of anxiety in situations where the person perceives their environment to be unsafe. These situations consists open spaces, public transit, shopping centers, outside their home. The symptoms last for more than six months. People completely unable to leave their homes. Agoraphobia is due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. The condition runs in families, and stressful events such as being attacked may be a trigger. In the DSM-5 agoraphobia is a type of phobia along with social phobia. Similar symptoms include separation anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and major depressive disorder.
