Abstract

In the context of a disrupted myocardial oxygen supply and demand balance, the perioperative phase causes unanticipated and severe changes in coronary plaque properties that may result in unfavourable cardiovascular events. This "ischemic-imbalance" creates the conditions for postoperative cardiac complications, which have a high morbidity and mortality rate. The combination of numerous factors, including pre-existing medical conditions, high-risk surgical procedures, intraoperative hemodynamic control and postoperative care, determines the likelihood of myocardial injury. Myocardial Infarction (MI) in a non-operative environment is distinct from Perioperative Myocardial Infarction (PMI).
