INFLAMMATORY BREAST CANCER, THE BREAST CANCER YOU CAN SEE: WAIT

WHAT?

Peggy Stephens

I

nflammatory breast cancer, the breast cancer you can see. Wait. What? Yes, there is a type of breast cancer

that you can ‘see’ and it may hurt. It’s called Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC). This is the most aggressive and

deadly type of breast cancer. Cancer cells block the lymph vessels in the skin of the breast which can cause it

to become swollen, red or inflamed. IBC is rare, accounting for 1 to 5 percent of all breast cancers diagnosed in

the United States and progresses rapidly, often in a matter of days or weeks. It grows in sheets or nests which is

why mammograms rarely pick it up. At diagnosis, IBC is stage IIIB.
